for Surface Magazine

After nine years of living in New York, the Brooklyn Navy Yard was still a mystery to me; with its 2-mile security gate and bizarre blend of old and new. When Surface magazine told me I would have a full day to wander by myself, I jumped at the opportunity. Despite the gloomy weather, I strolled the property and discovered everything from a chocolate factory and tech lab, to a movie studio and the abandoned fuselage of a plane. Firefighters sat on their trucks at sunset, as young programmers rode shuttle buses off to the subway. The Yard is an unlikely place for a new San Francisco, but that’s what is evolving alongside the Oystermen and abandoned buildings.
